Architectural Millwork in Northern California
Architectural millwork is the custom woodwork built into a space: wall systems, paneling, built-in casework, shelving and statement pieces that are part of the design rather than furniture added later. PhillBuilt fabricates and installs architectural millwork from our Rancho Cordova shop for projects across Sacramento and the San Francisco Bay Area.
Architectural millwork we fabricate
- Wall systems and paneling: wood walls, slat systems and feature walls
- Built-in shelving and casework: open and adjustable shelving, display walls and storage scribed to the room
- Reception, host and service stations: the first thing guests and clients touch
- Millwork around architecture: casework fitted to arches, columns, windows and out-of-square existing buildings
- Mixed-material work: wood paired with brass, stainless steel, glass, leather and acrylic
Built around the building
Good architectural millwork has to fit the building exactly. Two recent examples:
1X Technologies, San Carlos. For 1X's new headquarters, we built two walls of adjustable cherry shelving, each about 65 feet long, with cabinetry wrapping six arched windows, each 18 feet wide. From first call to install, the project ran on a four-week schedule.
The Citizen Hotel, Sacramento. The Citizen occupies a 1925 landmark on J Street. Its new front desk, designed by Indidesign, combines solid walnut casework, solid brass trim, leather and glass. It's a one-off piece made to belong in a historic lobby.
Materials and finishes
We work in solid hardwoods and veneers, including white oak, walnut, cherry and Douglas fir. Finishes such as Rubio Monocoat and Osmo hardwax oils are chosen for how the space will be used. Every piece is CNC-machined for accuracy and finished by hand in our shop.
Working with architects and designers
We're comfortable working from full construction documents or from design intent alone. Bring us drawings, renderings or reference images. We'll work through construction details and material options with you, then build and install.
Architectural millwork FAQ
What is architectural millwork?
Architectural millwork is custom woodwork built for a specific space: wall paneling, shelving walls, built-in casework, window seats, reception desks and bar fronts. It is designed around the architecture rather than bought off the shelf.
Can you build millwork around curved or irregular architecture?
Yes. At 1X Technologies in San Carlos, we built cherry shelving and window seats that wrap six arched windows, each 18 feet wide. We measure in the field and fabricate curved and radiused parts in our shop.
Do you work with architects and interior designers?
Yes. We build from the design team's drawings and coordinate details, materials and finishes before fabrication.
Which areas do you serve?
We build in Rancho Cordova and install throughout the Sacramento region and the San Francisco Bay Area with our own crew.
What finishes and species do you offer?
White oak, walnut, cherry and other hardwoods, plus veneers and laminates. Finishes range from natural oil to stains and ebonized finishes. Details can include fluting, slats, CNC texture, brass and steel.
