Walk into almost any playroom and you will find plastic: chairs, stools and tables in bright molded colors. Plastic kids furniture is cheap and easy to find, but it is rarely the best choice for families who want things that last and look good in their home. Here is how solid wood and plastic compare.
Wood vs. plastic at a glance
- Lifespan: plastic often lasts a few years before it cracks, fades or warps; solid wood can last for generations.
- Stability: solid wood has more weight, so a stool or chair feels planted.
- Repair: wood can be sanded, touched up and refinished; scratched or cracked plastic usually cannot.
- Looks: wood looks like furniture and fits in living spaces; plastic looks like a toy.
- Upfront cost: plastic is cheaper to buy.
- Cost over time: one well-made wood piece can replace several plastic ones over the years and still have value afterward.
Durability
Kids are hard on furniture. They climb, drag, drop and draw on it. Molded plastic can crack at stress points and becomes brittle in sunlight. Solid wood with good joinery takes years of that use, and when it shows wear, the wear can be repaired.
Stability and weight
Light plastic chairs slide and tip easily. Solid wood has enough weight to stay where it is put while still being light enough for a child to move. Always supervise small children on any seat or step.
How it looks in your home
Kids furniture rarely stays in the playroom. It ends up in the kitchen, the living room and beside the dining table. A wood stool with a simple, well-designed shape looks at home there in a way plastic does not.
Waste and sustainability
Much plastic kids furniture is used for a few years and thrown away. Solid wood furniture can be passed to siblings, given to friends or kept as a keepsake, and wood is a renewable material.
What to look for in wood kids furniture
- Solid wood, not particleboard or thin veneer that chips
- A stable, wide stance with legs that will not wobble
- Eased edges and a smooth finish
- The right size for your child and your table
- A maker you can contact if something ever needs attention
Our kids stool
We make the Primary Craft Stool, a handmade kids stool in solid alder with legs in your choice of yellow, red, blue or green. The natural wood is finished in Osmo clear satin, a low-VOC hardwax oil, and the legs are painted in a durable conversion varnish, with a water-based paint available on request. It is sold in sets of 2 and 4. It is built in our California shop, the same shop that built custom furniture for The Kitchen and Localis, both starred in the 2026 MICHELIN Guide California.
